Lara Klawikowski is a South African fashion designer based in Cape Town. She launched her eponymous label in 2010 with a focus on avant-garde design, after graduating from Cape Town College of Fashion Design and winning the SACTWU Condom Dress Design Award. During her studies, she won the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award, was a top 5 graduate at the Cape Town Fashion Council Graduate Shows, runner-up in the Foschini Annual Design Awards and completed an introductory course in shoe making and shoe design.
She took a sabbatical in 2012 and worked as a designer at a local footwear supplier but soon returned to her studio to pursue her brand. She showcased her first ready-to-wear collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town 2013. She was a semi-finalist in the South African Fashion Week Renault New Talent Search 2013 and continues to showcase her collections at Design Indaba and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town annually.
Lara Klawikowski designs wearable art - high-concept womanswear, employing advanced pattern-cutting and unexpected, complex garment construction, unusual draping, tailoring techniques, re-fabricated materials and her signature asymmetry. Her designs are intriguingly tactile, artisanal and imaginative. She often references historical fashion, resulting in contemporary interpretations with a distinctive artistry, edge, and other-worldly beauty.
All garments are uniquely crafted at her studio in Woodstock. Made-to-measure designs, including custom bridal wear, can be ordered from her studio and ready-to-wear designs are sold exclusively at boutiques in Cape Town.
