LARA KLAWIKOWSKI A/W 2017 at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town 2017

Our Autumn/Winter 2017 collection showcased at African Fashion International’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town 2017 was inspired by historical architecture in the Cape Town CBD – the detail in windows, doorways, staircases and intricate mosaic floors of City Hall and surrounding buildings.

I became intrigued by the way urban Capetonian women dressed centuries ago, and imagined a contemporary interpretation, referencing the elements of historical urban Cape Town fashion and the architectural geometry of the city. I was inspired by the diverse cross-pollination of fashion and cultural influences in South Africa historically, that still exists today.

The collection employs various manipulated material surfaces creating artisanal fabrics, tactile woollen embroidery and appliqué, quilting, signature re-fabrication and delicate hand-woven tulle weaves. All materials used were uniquely re-fabricated and hand-woven at our studio in Woodstock, and combined to form structured, light-weight garments with refined textural details offering winter warmth without bulk.

LARA KLAWIKOWSKI Spring / Summer 2015/16 ‘youyou’ at MBFWCT 2015

Our Spring/Summer 2015/16 collection was inspired by the awkwardness, uncertainty and unnecessary pressure young women sometimes feel while getting dressed for an event where they are expected to ‘dress-up’. I created a collection for women who want to dress-up differently, unconventionally and unexpectedly, wearing pieces they find intriguing and love, even it means clashing with a dress code.

I explored the history of dressing up, specifically the history of corsetry, and drew inspiration from the layered architecture of corsetry and the intricacy of the old-fashioned construction details. I drew inspiration from early 20th century beach scenes, a time when a more relaxed approach to stringent corsetry was emerging. I also experimented with an alternative method of re-fabricating lace-like textures.

LARA KLAWIKOWSKI at Salon 58: Noir

Lara Klawikowski was one of the designers to showcase a collection of dresses in a Little Black Dress Showcase at Jackie Burger’s Salon 58: Noir at the P J Olivier art gallery in Stellenbosch this weekend.

The designs included sculptural cord-coated chiffon dresses inspired by LARA KLAWIKOWSKI A/W 2015 collection. The dresses were cut from classic pattern shapes but the contrast in materials, the soft chiffon and flexible cord, created a slightly warped, asymmetrical and subtly unpredictable feminine silhouette, emphasizing the curves of the body in a unique way. The dresses were artistic and imaginative, each with their own unusual and unexpected sculptural idiosyncrasies.
